On Thursday evening, the UAH community got to hear from Bob Lujano, a Paralympic medalist in wheelchair rugby. Lujano, a Birmingham native, shared his inspiring story and also raised awareness about disabilities. One topic he specifically discussed was getting rid of the fear of disability.

“Disability is a human experience — a wonderful experience,” said Lujano. “[I talked] about the fears people have and the exclusions people with disabilities go through and what they can do to be an advocate in their very own community and very own job.”

Lujano also encouraged students to write down their goals and share them with people who support them. He said twenty of the major goals he wrote down as a 17 year-old he has already accomplished. Getting married is the most recent goal he achieved. Lujano says he has many more goals — one of those is visiting Rome, Italy.

Lujano is also a published author and starred in the Academy award winning movie, Murderball.
